Drinking and driving is a terrible thing to do. We have DWI laws because you can easily kill or maim someone. But that's usually because drunken drivers are usually in cars...not coolers:
A Whitehall man was charged with driving while intoxicated after police pulled him over for swerving and driving on the sidewalk on a four-wheeled, motorized cooler known as a "Cruzin Cooler."
Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr, 57, could face felony DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle charges because of prior arrests and convictions in drinking-and-driving cases, said Whitehall Police Chief Richard LaChapelle.
The electricity-powered Cruzin Cooler that Marr was riding contained 14 beers, the chief said.
"We were told it can do up to 12 mph," the police chief said.
Marr had apparently just left the nearby American Legion Post 83, but it was unclear where he was going, LaChapelle said. He was not headed toward his Lafayette Street home, and he refused to take a breath test, the chief said.
I'm not sure how much damage a Cruzin' Cooler could do, but isn't this one of those situations where the cop who pulled him over should just give him a ride home instead of actually pressing charges? If this guy gets the book thrown at him, then I guess we have to toss every wheelchair-bound person who's put back a sixer of Old Style in the slammer. (Now that I think of it, Drunken Wheelchairs In Prison would be an awesome TV show. Can someone tell Fox?)
I saw one of these once at a bingo game. It was one of the prize. People were excited. Also I can't help but notice how the cooler model closely resembles Chevy Chase.
"Police pulled him over..." What do you think--high speed chase with sirens, flashing lights, PA speaker order: "Pull over immediately, keep your hands where we can see them." Whenever I forget why I instinctively don't like cops, I read an article like this. Then I remember.
Oh, and POS vehicle. No chrome, tinted windows, headers or stereo system.
