My cats are formerly shelter cats. After 5 years of tender treatment in a safe and loving home, they are still very skittish. They’ve been known to wet themselves on a visit to the vet. Do you think they get a bath afterward? You betcha! Cleaning themselves by dripping pee all over the house isn’t an option.

Yeah, it’s mean, but it’s not like people were doing it just for the shear joy of torturing housepets; NOBODY gives a bath to a squirmy five-pound bundle of claws and teeth unless it *really* needs it)… at least, nobody without a good supply of chainmail laying around the house.
I mean, if your cat “investigates” the neighborhood skunk den, beyond your own nose, it’s actually kinda mean to the cat to leave him to lick all that off compared to just getting it over with.

So unnecessary, too… cats clean themselves just fine, and do NOT need bathing.
For people with cat allergies a bath every other week or so can make a huge difference. Not to mention the fact that cats are notorious for getting into things they shouldn’t, those baths might be more necessary than you think.
Scratched: Have you seen some of that bathwater? Some cats are filthy creatures. And that’s why they need bathing. I have several and have only ever bathed one when the need arose, last time was several years ago.
