You remember when Sesame Street had an HIV-positive muppet on the show to teach kids about accepting others (or not boning junkies without a condom). Well, the BBC has topped them by putting Cerrie Burnell, a one-armed actual woman on their kids show. I’m sure the idea was that if children are used to seeing an amputee during their formative years, then the stigma attached to those missing limbs will wash away over the years. But instead, it’s scaring the shit out of kids. According to the BBC:
When the BBC hired a pretty young actress to co-host a daily program for toddlers, it never expected viewers to complain that the young woman might give their children nightmares.
A handful [of parents] have written to the station complaining about her disability. Some say she may frighten the children. Others accuse the network of going overboard in the interests of diversity.
But can you really go overboard when it comes to diversity? I look forward to the day when all children’s television shows are hosted by either horrific burn victims or corpses (we have to teach the children about death sometime.)

I’m stumped…
A “handful” of parents have written to the station complaining about her disability… Brilliant writing I bet the network executives are “stumped” about whether or not to fire her
