Oprah Makes 385 Million A Year

Some things are too massive for me to comprehend, like space or Prince Fielder. So when I heard this, I couldn’t really wrap my head around it:

Usmagazine reports Oprah Winfrey earns a whopping $385 million a year.

If Oprah deserves that much money, that would mean she’s roughly 7500 times more valuable than me. Hmm, yeah, that pretty much makes sense. Okay, but fine, maybe Oprah is worth that much, but the article also says this:

Kyra Sedgwick takes home $275,000 per episode of TNT’s The Closer, making her top- earning actress on a cable network drama.

First of all, I’m pretty sure The Closer isn’t even a real show, just a promo TNT runs to give you a breather between back to back airings of The Shawshank Redemption. The only way that paycheck is justified is if they’re giving her 50 dollars per promo. I think even Tyler Perry is like “Jesus, enough with these f&*kin’ Closer promos.”

If you can’t comprehend what you can buy with 385 million dollars, maybe this will help you out:

UM I agree with “Lame”. An also, that ish about Oprahoma is bullish. That is about 2 times bigger than Texas. Bridges in states aren’t even shown on maps and there worth millions, so some land 2 times bigger than Texas is TRILLIONS not 385MILLION. However i guess the hyperbole is implied.

Everyone always talked about Opera like she is some sort of super human and I never got my head around why, but now I know.

  3. And who says all people who smoke krack turn out to be nothing.

    To all you whiners:

Value is not some magical number of self worth. Value is determined by people. Oprah is more valuable than most other people, because she offers things that people are willing to pay for.

Oil barons are making big bucks, because guess what: People want to drive cars! Amazing isn’t it?

I’m so sick of people (esp. redditors) complaining about how “rich people don’t work 7500 times as hard as me, but they make that much more than me so give me some of their money”

They make that much more money because what they are doing is of greater financial value.

Think of income as an expression like: Income = value * number of people.

If you write a book for one person. Say it is a super awesome personal development book that makes them change their life, but you only sell it to that one person for $50.

Now suppose, instead of 1 person, you have figured out a way to reach 10,000,000 people.
All of the sudden, you are miraculous worth more, because you can offer a greater value, to a greater number of people.

It doesn’t matter that she is perhaps not “working as hard” as you are.

If you want to change your life and make more money:
    1. Stop whining and blaming other people.
    2. Learn a skill that is VALUABLE to other people, I.E. something other people are wiling to pay $$ for.
    3. Always try to create more value, and distribute that value to the most number of people.

yeah, but she can’t buy happiness.

    or something.

The way she has touched my life in so many ways…she is worth evry penny. The dresses I wear and the food I eat and the books I read…I know I can’t live without her. I LOVE OPRAH!!!!!!!!

Haha. You guys kill me. You talk about “paying all this money out to people” like Oprah. Ophrah worked harder than everyone on this board put together to get where she is. She doesn’t have a boss (I know I do). She makes many people millions of dollars and for that she can set her own salary. I’m not bothered at all by rich self made people like oprah, steve jobs, bill gates, etc. These people worked hard for years to build a brand and many people benefit from this. Athletes on the other hand shouldn’t make millions for playing a game that they would play for free anyway (i’m a sports bigot obviously).

    Who is worth $385 million?

  13. thecandyshopper says:

Well you know what we say: “What we don’t know won’t h**t.” I mean until you can hear Oprah say it out of her own mouth that she makes 385 million!!! That’s all I’m saying, here.

  14. notacommunist says:

this is capitalism at its best. is it just me, or does anyone else think its wrong that a handful of people like this have that much money while other people are struggling to eat every other day? not only is it not fair, but it is not right. how can that fat cow sit on a couch making that much money telling other people to live their lives when she consciously accepts large sums of money while fellow humans are dying of disease, starvation, war, poverty, etc. like my name says im not a communist, im not a capitalist either. it think both are two extremes that we should be able to find a working medium for.

    just my thoughts…

  15. Matt says:

Is 385 Million the value of her salary or the total of her earnings + the appreciation of her assets. I’m pretty sure it’s the latter. She owns her own show, Dr. Phil’s show, along with numerous investments. To say she’s not worth that much is to say to someone, you can start your own company, but if you get too rich, we’re taking it all back.

  16. Derek H says:

Great that she donates about 43% of her annual salary to various charities a year its very great that she involves much in charity and helps the orphans she has helped many people in so many ways.

  17. dc says:

the article says she earns 385mil a year, whether that be in cash or assets or both. i will say i have to agree with notacommunist though. that much money for one person is outrageous. im not saying go robin hood style and take from the rich to give to the poor, im just saying all that money could be put to better use instead of using it to buy gifts for a studio audience.

  18. fond says:

Megan you’re an idiot. I hope you oprah lovers die sometime soon. NO ONE is worth over a million dollars a day NO ONE.

  19. Joe says:

Oprah is not even remotely the problem. People only bring up her wealth because it seems a violation of the natural order for so many silly entertainers to be rich, especially if they are women or Black Americans. Also she is a more familiar face than most media speculators. But many other media moguls are much wealthier than she is.

As of 1995 (the latest figures available), Federal Reserve research found that the wealth of the top one percent of Americans is greater than that of the bottom 95 percent. Three years earlier, the Fed’s Survey of Consumer Finance found that the top one percent had wealth greater than the bottom 90 percent.

The top ONE percent in the U.S own 38 percent of all wealth, and the concentration is accelerating rapidly. Many U.S. super-rich don’t even show up in statistics because they take offshore citizenship.

Three decades ago, the people in well-to-do countries were 30 times better off than those in countries where the poorest 20 percent of the world’s people live. By 1998, this gap had widened to 82 times (up from 61 times since 1996).

3 billion people live on less than $2 per day while 1.3 billion get by on less than $1 per day. Seventy percent of those living on less than $1 per day are women.

  20. Naaaahhhhh says:

Does that have anything to do with how tired/ragged she looks and lifeless she is?

But they wouldn’t let that “I am God” or lack of God-fearing women buy OK for a penny. OK would boot her out of the country first. (Isn’t the Antichrist who comes from the sea supposed to be male?)

Someone give her a pillow, retire her and develop ten new shows and what not to replace her. . .NOW!

  22. GrettaRose says:

That makes me sick. That’s enough money to comfortably support over 5,000 FAMILIES for a year. Yet those 5,000 families are starving or losing their homes. What on God’s earth does one person need with all that money? I dont care how hard she works. Plenty of us work very hard.

  23. Pratik says:

I think the “Getting paid way too damn much for something so trivial” should be passed on from Alex Rodriguez to Kyra Sedgewick.

P.S. “something so trivial” = pleasing Yankee fans, not playing baseball.

  24. Billsilver says:

Um the yankee fans hate A-rod you must be mistaking him for Derek Jeter.

  25. M4TT says:

  26. Stephen67 says:

$385 million a year and she still gets stuck with more baggage under her eyes than an airport on September 12th.

  27. L says:

The Closer and Saving Grace are the same show. There is nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise.

  28. kevin says:

over a million a day thats bullshit, world is hurting but its ok to pay all this money out to people like that…gotta love it….

  29. Memzie says:

Oprahoma is just the beginning next we will be hearing the “State of the Oprah Address”, and she’ll be like “My fellow Americans….. LOOK UNDER YOUR COUCHES’ssssss” and we will actually find shit under there like the new Bill of Oprah’s Rights and a copy of the Declaration of Oprah’pendance.

  30. Mike D. says:

385 Million huh?…… I’m 26 and have worked for the last ten years and have made roughly 280k DOING HARD WORK! Iv got it, I’m just going to get fatter Throw prizes at people in the crowd, and sit on a damn couch all day telling you what books i think you should read. Oh, and marry a lesbian. I was blind all these years, I thought hard work got you places, my mistake. ;)

  31. whoindatgarden says:

Well if it is ok to speculate and make money like Hedge FUnd Managers do and take home a few Billion a year then it is perfectly ok for Oprah to make what she makes.
Just remember she has worked hard to get to where she is.
Try sitting on a couch and getting people to listen to you frustrated lamerz are pathetic.
Don’t complain if you aint making it.
